Inflation in Peru would accelerate to 8.9% per year due to the rise in food prices

He also said that he hopes this impact is temporary due to the reactivation measures launched by the Government at the end of last year.

“The greatest impact of the protests is being generated on the issue of prices,” Contreras told reporters upon leaving the Government Palace, adding: “It is a temporary increase, we estimate that (annual) inflation could close in January between 8.8% and 8.9% depending on how communications are restored.”

Peru registered inflation of 0.79% in December and closed the year 2022 at 8.46%the highest annual measurement in the last 26 years, according to the statistics institute.

The Central Bank expects a downward trend in year-on-year inflation since March, and a return to the range target of between 1% and 3% inflation by the end of 2023.

In the protests that began in December, the demonstrators mainly demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress and a new Constitution.
