“The greatest impact of the protests is being generated on the issue of prices,” Contreras told reporters upon leaving the Government Palace, adding: “It is a temporary increase, we estimate that (annual) inflation could close in January between 8.8% and 8.9% depending on how communications are restored.”
Peru registered inflation of 0.79% in December and closed the year 2022 at 8.46%the highest annual measurement in the last 26 years, according to the statistics institute.
The Central Bank expects a downward trend in year-on-year inflation since March, and a return to the range target of between 1% and 3% inflation by the end of 2023.
In the protests that began in December, the demonstrators mainly demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the closure of Congress and a new Constitution.
