The mines and energy ministry had announced Prates’ appointment on January 3. On Tuesday, his application had already been approved by Petrobras’ ethics department.
The new head of Petrobras was recently recognized by international energy magazines Recharge and WindPoweras one of the three most influential people in the renewable energy sector in Brazil, one of the 50 most important in the world energy sector and one of the 25 exponents of the world wind industry.
Prates -54-year-old lawyer- between 1990 and 2000 was a member of the legal council of Petrobras International SA – Braspetro, the largest oil consultancy in the country. In this role, he coordinated projects for various public and private, national and international companies, trade union and sector entities, and advised governments, regulatory bodies and parliamentarians in all areas of the energy sector.
Later, in the political arena, Prates served as Secretary of Energy of the Regional Government of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Among his achievements, he led the State to energy self-sufficiency and national leadership in wind generation, in addition to having consolidated a refinery and gas and biomass thermoelectric plants, and having built bases for offshore solar and wind energy.
Already as a senator, between 2019 and 2023, he was part of several parliamentary commissions, such as the commissions for Economic Affairs, Services and Infrastructure, and Science and Technology.
What’s coming at Petrobras
Prior to his ratification in office, Prates had already announced changes in the oil company’s pricing policy, which fixes the values of fuels based on the international price of a barrel. On Tuesday, the price of gasoline rose 7.5% for distributors, in the first adjustment made by the new government and after 45 days without changes.
During the government of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), the company had four presidents: Roberto Castello Branco, Joaquim Silva e Luna, José Mauro Coelho (for a month and a half) and Caio Paes de Andrade. Bolsonaro displaced them, one by one, in disagreement with the constant increases in fuel prices by Petrobras, which controls the Brazilian fuel market.
The trade union movement welcomed the appointment. The appointment of Prates “represents the beginning of a new era towards growth and the resumption of the role of the company as an inducer of the economic and social development of the country,” reacted the head of the Single Federation of Petroleum Workers (FUP), Deyvid Bacelar. , quoted in a statement.
