As Statistics Austria announced in its flash estimate on Wednesday, the inflation rate is likely to have risen to 11.1 percent in January. That would be the highest value in the current wave of inflation, after 11.0 percent in October 2022. The reason is the electricity prices, despite the electricity price brake, since the measures to contain network costs will only take effect from March.

Most recently, inflation had slowed down slightly and was 10.2 percent in December 2022. Austria is currently experiencing the highest inflation in 70 years. At that time, in July 1952, the inflation rate was 14.1 percent.
