The list of applications submitted for Feronia, Upper Austria’s sustainability award, is getting longer every day. In cooperation with the state and the Oberbank, the OÖN are looking for exemplary concepts, products, services and initiatives in the areas of business, culture and social affairs. The application deadline is February 11th. Interested parties can register at nachrichten.at/feronia.
A top-class jury will determine who emerges as the winner in the four categories. It applied in the “Sustainable Products and Services” category fresh catch from Ulrichsberg. The company of Michael Plöckinger and Manuel Pfeil runs one of the largest indoor aquacultures for trout and zander in Austria. In addition to salt to regenerate the mucous membranes, only baking soda for the pH value and vinegar for disinfection are added to the water from fresh catch.

Also included in this category is the Brewing commune Freistadt: With an annual output of 150,000 hectoliters, the energy requirement is correspondingly high. The brewery counters this with the conversion of logistics to e-mobility and a heat recovery system for the catering trade. An in-house incentive system was developed to encourage employees to save energy.
Die meets the conflict between sustainable packaging and hygiene standards Honeyder natural bakery offering 90 percent of the goods unpackaged or selling them in paper bags. Plastic bags have not been around since 2012. In order to reduce food waste, a dedicated line of products made from recycled bread was established.
