Survey: Companies have some catching up to do when it comes to digitization

There is still room for improvement when it comes to digitizing companies in Germany. The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce wanted to know why that is.

Companies in Germany have some catching up to do when it comes to digitization. This emerges from a survey presented in Berlin by the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce. According to this, 37 percent of the companies state a lack of time and 34 percent a lack of financial resources as the main obstacle to digital transformation.

“Rising prices and a shortage of skilled workers are forcing companies to prioritize their own digitization efforts,” said Ilja Nothnagel, member of the DIHK executive board.

The survey of more than 4,000 companies showed that the main motives for digitization are that companies want to reduce running costs and make work processes more flexible. However, external factors hampered the speedy implementation of digitization projects. Almost every fifth company complains about the ongoing shortage of IT specialists. Regulations and bureaucracy are also mentioned.

The expansion of the digital infrastructure is progressing steadily. But still every fourth company has an insufficient internet supply. In addition, processes should be able to be handled quickly and digitally, especially between companies and administrations. It was also said that with advancing digitization, data use and networking, the risk of becoming victims of digital blackmail, sabotage and espionage also increases for companies.
