Analyzing the last six months, the main fact to highlight is that average inflation at the international level grew again after two months of decline.

The median value of the surveyed countries was 0.5 in January. If you look at the inflation of the country that is in the 25th percentile, you can see an acceleration in the last month. Inflation in the last four months was 0.4%, -0.1%, -0.2% and 0.2%, respectively. The same happened in the country that is in the 75th percentile. Inflation in the last four months was 1.2%, 0.8%, 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively.

Inflation in Argentina reached 6.3% monthly in October, 4.9% in November, 5.1% in December and 6.0% in January. The gap between Argentine monthly inflation and the median of the sample considered was 5.5 percentage points in January, higher than in previous months. With the January data, Argentina consolidates an average annual inflation of 58.7% in the last four years.

Among the countries, it is worth noting that, although the majority had positive monthly inflation, seven countries had negative inflation: 1 Spain, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands. It is also worth noting that only eight countries had inflation above 1.0%.

The countries with the highest inflation in January:

  • Turkey (6.6%)
  • Argentina (6%)
  • Czech Republic (6%)
  • Slovak Republic (2.6%)
  • Hungary(2,3).

The countries with the lowest inflation in January

  • Spain (-0.2%)
  • United Kingdom (-0.4%)
  • Luxembourg (-0.4%)
  • Greece (-0.5%)
  • Ireland (-0.8%).

Considering the interannual variation of January 2023, Argentina (98.8%) and Turkey (57.7%) stand out in the sample considered. Then follows a second group of three countries with inflation above 20% year-on-year (Hungary, Latvia and Lithuania). At the other extreme, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Bolivia and China registered year-on-year inflation of less than 5%.
