Hidden Places – Working under the Autobahn

Hidden Places – Working under the Autobahn

This mini apartment was built in the middle of Valencia. The stage hangs under a bridge – mounted on wheels, the small room can move up and down the entire length under the bridge. There is a shelf on one side of the bridge – a few pictures on the concrete create a homely atmosphere. The bedding is also housed there.

A really cozy retreat was not created. The traffic thunders above the bridge, the wind blows through the small apartment from below. It is also an art project and not social housing. It is a kind of parasitic architecture – its special attraction lies in the fact that it nests itself in existing structures unnoticed. Drivers and pedestrians do not notice the small space.

Relived childhood

“Huts have been very important to me since I was a child,” says designer Fernando Abellanas. “Not these idyllic cottage huts, but a place where you can escape from our rest of the environment.” The autodidact feels magically drawn to neglected places. In the middle of the city are these non-places that people don’t go to and don’t even want to see. Somehow left over when everything else in their area was built on. In the past one could discover such places in the deep forest and in the mountain regions, today these deserted retreats can be found in the city.

The floating stage recreates a children’s experience: “This feeling of hiding under a table and yet hearing and seeing everything that is going on around you. Here I can watch the cars and trains, that gives me a feeling deep peace. ” Many evenings Abellanas flees from hectic Valencia to his bridge and works there in the light of a gas lamp. The exact location of the bridge and hut are secret. Just like the locations of the other hidden places that Fernando Abellanas sets up.
