Construction costs remain high in February

Compared to February 2022, prices increased in all civil engineering sectors.

Compared to the same month last year, the index for residential and residential construction in February was 5.3 percent higher, Statistics Austria announced on Wednesday. Compared to January 2023, there was an increase of 0.2 percent. In civil engineering, road construction costs in particular rose year-on-year. Compared to February 2022, prices increased in all civil engineering sectors. In February this year, road construction increased by 10.4 percent, sanitary engineering by 7.9 percent and bridge construction by 3.6 percent. Compared to January 2023, the costs of bridge construction rose by 0.1 percent and those of sanitary engineering by 0.2 percent, while they remained at the same level for road construction.

In a year-on-year comparison, transport costs in particular increased, which affected all construction sectors. In residential and residential construction, the product groups polystyrene, foam boards as well as ready-made plaster, ready-made screed and tile adhesive continued to drive up costs, while in civil engineering cost increases in the product groups bituminous mixtures, diesel and fuels had a particularly negative impact. The costs in the product groups of cast iron goods and pipes, plastic and concrete pipes also increased and thus primarily influenced sanitary engineering.
