1 in 3 companies expect an economic improvement in the coming months

The Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) published a survey on the development of the activity during January 2023 and the expectations of companies for the coming months.

The Argentine Industrial Union (UIA) published a survey on the activity business during January 2023 and growth expectations: only 31% expected a better economic situation for their companies in the coming months.

In addition, there is an improvement in business expectations regarding the economic situation at the national level. However, the levels are still on lower floors, as only 20.3% expected in January a better situation for the coming monthsbelow that of the same month of 2022 (25.4%).

The growth of industrial activity slowed down at the end of 2022 due to greater restrictions on the importation of inputs, high levels of inflation and rising interest rates, added to a greater base of comparison.

Employment

The survey also shows less activity in industrial employment during January: 17.8% of companies indicated that they reduced their staffing compared to the average for the fourth quarter of 2022, higher than the 10.5% registered in the previous survey in October. The value is the highest recorded within the series and exceeded for the first time the percentage of companies with increases in their staffing, which was 13.9% in January 2023.

PyMIs

Small and Medium Industries (PyMIs) showed a reduction in their activity, in line with the employment record. 45.8% of them registered falls in production (in October this percentage had been 30%), while only 15.3% registered increases (compared to the 21.7% registered in October). The low production can also be seen in sales to the domestic market and exports.

gender perspective

The survey included an analysis of the participation of women in the market. According to the UIA, in the last three decades shows a significant increase.

In 1990, more than 35% of women of working age participated in the labor market. Now, in 2022, the percentage reached 50%although it has stagnated in recent years with a considerable gap compared to the male participation rate.
