Economists highlight the price freeze promoted by the Government

After which, he specified: “When there is a moderate-high inflation like the one we are experiencing, one loses a little the reference of what is a correct or acceptable price, and in that sense this program helps to take care of the consumer’s pocket, that having these reference prices, you can make the purchase decision. “

“These programs show that there is concern and occupation on the part of the State”; The economist stated about the measures taken to curb the inflationary rhythm, which according to Schclarek Curutchet, is a “multi-casual” and “inertial” problem.

“There is an occupation and concern in a phenomenon that is complex and that requires a more comprehensive set of measures,” said the economist, and highlighted, in that sense, the exchange rate administration policy and the “good diagnosis” of the problem of the Minister of Economy, Martín Guzmán.

Along the same lines, the economist Sergio Chouza considered today “important and appropriate” in a “complex context” the decision of the national government to roll back the prices of 1,432 products to October 1, freezing them until next January 7, and affirmed that the recent increases in food were “unjustified “.

“As an emergency provision, as a measure in a complex context, it seems important and appropriate to me”, said the economist in statements to Télam.

Likewise, Chouza remarked that the increases registered prior to the agreement were “unjustified”, since “the macroeconomic scenario does not justify the excessive price changes.”

“In the post-election context, there were coverage phenomena in some marketing sectors as a result of a fear of future devaluation and this was transferred to prices”, he stated.

In that sense, he added: “The increases were unjustified because today the exchange rate is in a balanced situation and the economic authorities have already stated that they do not consider it necessary to modify it.”

In the same way, Chouza remarked that during this year there was a “distributive bid” by parity that was “ordered” without “excessive requests by the unions.”

“There is no reason to validate this type of increase in essential products, especially those with a captive market,” he said.

The economist and director of the consulting firm Analytica, Claudio Caprarulo, estimated today that the price freeze established by the Ministry of Internal Trade “may have an impact in the short term” and may bring “relief to consumers.”

“In the short term it can have an impact, especially if it ends up agreeing with the companies and if it is effective compliance”, remarked the economist in statements to Télam.

He also explained that the increase in food above the general price level has been occurring since 2018 due to the “exchange rate” and the price of commodities, which “advanced a lot since the pandemic.”

However, he considered that the price agreements would be “more effective” if they occur within the framework of a “stabilization plan than signals on monetary and fiscal policy”, since, otherwise, companies “will continue “with increases.

For his part, the economist Martin Burgos said today that the official decision to freeze food prices until next January 7 “serves as a ceiling” for the values and, after describing the increases applied as “speculative”, he considered that “there is some injustice” in the proposals carried out from some productive sectors because they are companies that “the Government helped a lot during the past year”, in the context of the pandemic, “by allowing them to pay their debt at the official exchange rate.”

“The agreement serves as a ceiling. The idea is that the prices that are in the Official Gazette (in the annex to Resolution 1050/2021 of the Ministry of Internal Trade published today), are the reference prices from here until January”explained Burgos, for whom the increases applied to those products were “speculative.”
