Dow executives will also participate in today’s meeting; the Secretary of Industry, Ariel Schale; the Undersecretary of Knowledge Economy, María Apólito; and the mayor of Puerto General San Martín, Carlos De Grandis.
The Dow situation
On October 6, the National Commission for the Defense of Competition issued a precautionary opinion in which it ordered the signature Dow Química Argentina SRL not to innovate, not alter or modify the productive assets owned by the Puerto General San Martín plant, San Lorenzo, Santa Fe province, unless the action taken is based on their maintenance, repair or improvement, as long as it is resolved your situation.
The actions were initiated ex officio at the request of the Minister of Productive Development as a result of the official communication made by the company Dow Química Argentina SRL, where reported its decision to close and terminate operations at the San Lorenzo plant, located in the province of Santa Fe, and continue supplying its local customers from its plant located in Brazil.
According to said communication, The factory was scheduled to remain in operation until May 2022 and complete shutdown and decommissioning would take place in the same year.
The company Dow Química Argentina SRL supplies 73% of the local supply of polyoxypropylene glycol and 41.5% of glycol ethers, therefore it has a dominant position in the Argentine market. These petrochemical products are widely used inputs essential for the automotive industry, mattress factories and household appliances.
The workers of the American company demonstrated on several occasions at the doors of the company to demand the continuity of the 120 jobs that were at stake. This, after the multinational announced that the Santa Fe plant will close, as part of a global restructuring of the company.
The Dow workers and the leaders of the United Petrochemical Workers and Employees Union (SOEPU) de San Lorenzo, decided to gradually shut down the plant, for safety reasons. In addition, they concentrated on the door of the establishment to give visibility to the crisis.
The factory, located in the Santa Fe industrial cordon, is the only polyurethane producer in the country and employs 120 workers. In Bahía Blanca, Dow has another plant where its maintenance was ensured.
