Latin American foreign ministers advanced in the project to fight inflation in the region

The foreign minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, coordinated a virtual Latin American ministerial meeting in preparation for a summit in which the presidents of 11 nations, including Argentina, will discuss the possibility of developing a joint action plan to combat inflation in the region.

The Foreign Minister of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrardcoordinated a Latin American ministerial meeting virtual in preparation for a summit to be held on 5th of Aprilin which the presidents of 11 nationsincluding Argentina, will discuss the possibility of develop a joint action plan to combat inflation in the region.

The initiative was born at the beginning of the month by decision of the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorwho first invited the president Alberto Fernandez and the president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In the virtual preparatory meeting held in the last hours, the participation the foreign ministers of Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, Honduras, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuelaas well as Colombian Minister of Commerce and the Undersecretary in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean of Brazil.

The participants, reported a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry collected by the Ansa news agency, “they exchanged points of view on the regional economic and trade agenda and on proposals to mitigate the inflationary effects on the basic food basket in the region”.

During The work meeting established that the meeting on April 5 “will include the identification of the import-export mechanisms of the countries individual participants and the list of exportable productsas well as services in the food and basic needs sector that can be at the center of trade, with the cooperation of the private sector and specialized international organizations”.

At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to work on a draft Political Declaration to achievein the short term, immediate exchanges of essential goods and servicesbased on tariff flexibility and technical and administrative deregulation, as well as establishing mechanisms that, in the medium term, allow the region to create its own food autonomy.´
