80% of women and diversities who work in the technological ecosystem have ever experienced situations of discrimination, violence and harassment at work and they attribute it to their gender, according to a report by the organization Women in Technology (Met).
In addition, from the report “Gender and Organizational Culture in Technology”, carried out in alliance with the consulting firm SMS Latinoamérica and the support of Cambras, it also appears that women and diversities who participate in the technology industry are less represented than men in programming and development roles (38% women and 51% men).
That is partly due, according to the report, to the persistence of gender stereotypes in the division of labor within companies.
Furthermore, it is revealed that 32% of women and diversities have more difficulties accessing leadership positions, while men almost did not report suffering from this problem (2%).
This report provides an overview of organizational cultures and relational dynamics among people who work in the technological ecosystem, paying special attention to how they have an unequal impact on the well-being, permanence, and growth possibilities of women and gender diversities.
“Yes ok we see progress and we see a progressive incorporation of women into the technology industry, structural inequalities persist that make women and diversities concentrate in undervalued and lower-paid positions” indicated the president of MeT, Laura Minuet.
These inequalities are closely related to the propensity of women and diversities to experience various situations framed in workplace and gender violence.
In this sense, the people surveyed indicated that they had experienced at least one situation of violence and 80% attributed it to their gender or sexual identity.
The situations they describe range from discredit and belittle their contributions to the point of sexism, discrimination or sexual harassment.
Regarding the latter, the report states that 6 out of 10 women and diversities indicated having experienced it.
However, only the 13% of gender and diversity initiatives surveys carried out by companies include protocols action in situations of harassment, abuse or gender violence.
“We present this study to continue exploring a reality that challenges and worries us, and to invite the technological ecosystem to reflect on the challenges that are needed to eradicate inequalities and promote the inclusion, talent and development of women and diversities in the sector. “said the executive director of MeT, loneliness halls.
Meanwhile, the coordinator of the UN Women Argentina Country Program, Veronica Baracat, expressed: “At UN Women, we call for action so that thes companies have greater diversity in technological teams and thus generate a critical mass of women and diversities. This will lead to an improvement, not only in work environments but also in the productivity of organizations”.
