Construction employment was above pre-pandemic levels

For these three agencies, the average year-on-year increase in jobs in the construction sector in July was 20.6%, 17.5% and 25.6%, respectively.

The Ieric released 337,390 construction jobs; the Indec, 372,557 and the OEDE 373,011.

The report prepared by the area that leads Roxana Mazzola stressed that “during the first seven months of 2021 the month-on-month increase in jobs continues” and stressed that “the number of jobs registered in July is close to or exceeds, according to the source, those registered in the months prior to the Covid-19 pandemic ”.

For its part, the Ieric pointed out that “the volume of occupation in July was similar to that registered in February 2020, prior to the outbreak of the pandemic” and remarked that “it must be remembered, however, that in that month the sector employment completed eleven consecutive months of contraction ”.

“If the comparison of the current occupancy level is made with July 2019, the situation marks a 17.4% lower volume,” said the Ieric.

However, he highlighted that “when comparing the current situation with what happened in 2017, the year of mid-term legislative elections, it is verified that the increase in jobs between March and July 2021, which was 4.8%, results in 1 percentage point higher than that observed in the same period of 2017, 3.8% ”.

“Although the data show evidence about employment registered in the private sphere, it is important to consider that public work is done through private companies, which is why it is contemplated in this sector of activity,” said the document produced. by Public Works.

In this sense, Indec data show that, compared to the same month of the previous year, in August 2021 the consumption of asphalt, round iron and steel increased by 125.3% and 199.7% respectively, which could be indicating that the recovery of the sector is extended to certain types of works, associated with public works.

In this regard, Fernando Lago, a member of the Argentine Chamber of Construction and the Observatory of Public Works of the Ministry, stated that “there is a broad consensus on the enormous impact of public investment on the growth of countries and on the quality of life of the population ”.

“Undoubtedly, the investment produces impacts on the community, on employment, on tax collection, on the environment, not only during the work but during the entire operation of the built property”Lago concluded.

Indec conducted a qualitative survey on construction of large companies in the sector, which showed favorable expectations regarding the level of activity expected for the September-November period.

Among the companies mainly dedicated to public works, 50% said that the level of activity will increase, while 42.9% said that it will not change and 7.1% that it will decrease. Those who estimate a rise in the level of activity during the next three months, attribute the growth to new public works plans (31.9%), the restart of public works (26.5%) and the growth of economic activity (24 %), Inter alia.
