The Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, held a meeting this Tuesday with senators from the United States, within the framework of 200 years of diplomatic relations and with the aim of drawing new economic and political cooperation mechanisms between both countries. One of the important points of the meeting was the need to promote trade between Argentina and the US.
Massa received at the Palacio de Hacienda a multi-party delegation of front-line legislators led by the Republican from the State of Texas, John Cornyn, which included members of various committees of the US Congress, both Democrats and Republicans.
During the meeting they discussed the layout of new transport routes economic and political cooperationin a pressing context, with the effects of the post-pandemic and the war of Russia in Ukraine that altered world economic variables.
From the portfolio led by Massa, they reported that both the minister and Cornyn highlighted the development of the bilateral relationship achieved in recent yearswhich included the recent bilateral meeting between Alberto Fernández and Joe Biden – the first in the White House but the fourth since both came to power – and also the signing of important agreements to strengthen relations.
Beyond these advances, the representatives of both countries emphasized the willingness to continue working at the highest level between the different powers of the State. Among the objectives set is the promotion of commercial exchange, which in 2022 exceeded US$15,000 million.

Trade exchange and expand exports
At the meeting, which was attended by the US ambassador to Argentina, Mark Stanley, Minister Massa stressed Argentina’s interest in balancing the balance by expanding national exports. Along these lines, he insisted that, as a starting point, it is important to resolve access difficulties that the US market presents in key sectors for our regional economies.
The level of bilateral exchange has great growth potential, considering the possibilities of diversification and integration into regional and global value chains, the minister remarked. Both parties agreed that Argentina and the US can be global partners to supply the world with strategic resources as energy, protein, agri-food and critical minerals.
In turn, they discussed the promotion of a greater flow of investments, scientific-technological, educational and cultural cooperation and the fight against climate change.
A few months after the 40th anniversary of the return of democracy in Argentina, Massa and Cornyn also discussed the development of a common agenda on the consolidation of democracy and the expansion of rights. In this sense, they highlighted the common objective of promoting an inter-American dialogue, based on continental solidarity, cooperation and the peaceful solution of conflicts.
The US delegation included Jeanne Shaheen (Democratic Senator from New Hampshire), Michael Lee (Republican Senator from Utah), Debra Fischer (Republican Senator from Nebraska), Michael Crapo (Republican Senator from Idaho), Roger Marshall (Republican Senator from Kansas ), Theodore Budd (Republican Senator from Northern California), who are part of key Senate committees such as budget, foreign relations, energy and finance, among others. Stanley also participated, and the United States Economic Affairs Counselor, Ernest Abisellan.
