On Tuesday, a liter of diesel cost an average of 1.598 euros, while petrol cost 1.608 euros, the ÖAMTC refers to the official fuel price calculator. Overall, fuel prices in March fell compared to March 2022, although they have recently risen again somewhat.
Prices at Austrian petrol pumps in March 2023 averaged EUR 1.624 per liter of diesel and EUR 1.576 per liter of petrol. This means that diesel costs around 23 cents and petrol around 19 cents less than in March 2022, according to a broadcast by the ÖAMTC on Wednesday. The maximum was reached in November with a price of over two euros per liter of diesel, a difference of 30 cents compared to petrol.
“Price increases cannot be justified”
However, the ÖAMTC admitted that the recent significant increase in oil prices has led to price increases at the pumps. “Compared to Tuesday last week, you currently pay around four cents more for a liter of petrol and around one cent more for diesel.” According to the ÖAMTC, the price of petrol was around EUR 1.60 this year with similar oil prices, so further price increases could not be justified. When it comes to oil prices, fuel prices should be around ten cents cheaper.
In view of the upcoming Easter weekend, the ÖAMTC recommends comparing prices, heading for cheap gas stations, refueling just before noon, avoiding unnecessary gear changes and generally driving with foresight and consistently.
