The idea for sustainable plastics made from fibre, wax and lime is around two decades old, says Erik Lippert, Managing Director of Greiner Zeroplast. The start-up, founded eight years ago, has now been bought by Greiner Innoventures and is therefore a subsidiary of Greiner.
The company, based in Kremsmünster, is a global leader in the field of plastic and foam solutions.
“We are rethinking plastic by developing unique bio-based materials for industrial injection molding,” says Lippert. With two employees, a technical expert and a process engineer, he develops biodegradable packaging material and everyday objects. That ranges from ballpoint pens to drinking cups, which should also be compostable, says Lippert. With the support of Greiner, the technical implementation up to series production is now possible.
According to Lippert, there is already a joint patent with the injection molding manufacturer Wittmann Battenfeld. Greiner Zeroplast, based in Spillern in Lower Austria, also cooperates with the Vienna University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences. Greiner Innoventures is currently supporting several start-ups, the search is ongoing, they say.
