Lithium in Argentina: record exports
Regarding the quantities of lithium exported, in the month of March they increased 3.5% year-on-year, while in the accumulated so far this year they exhibited an increase of 22.9%.
Argentina is establishing itself as a key player worldwide in this context of transition towards clean energy.
This data comes from two projects in production (Fenix in Catamarca and Olaroz in Jujuy). If Argentina continues at this pace, and the 6 projects currently under construction are put into production, in 2025 we will increase production capacity to more than 200,000 tons.
Fernanda Ávila, Secretary of Mining of the Nation, maintains that mining will diversify the productive matrix of the country so as not to depend solely on one sector and thus turn the activity into a pillar of development.
China is one of the main stakeholders in Argentine lithium. It was recently announced that the Zijin Mining group, which is in charge of the Tres Quebradas project in the Province of Catamarca, will disburse US$700 million this year.
The original projection was to produce 20,000 tons of carbonate “suitable for battery production” but with the new disbursements it could reach 60,000 tons. Exports, only from this initiative, would escalate to more than US$2 billion annually.
