The president of the UCR ruled out releasing the stocks immediately, rejected the idea of ”dynamiting everything” and charged hard against Javier Milei: “he is crazy and it would do the country very bad,” he said.
Gerardo Morales
In the prior to his exposure to the “red circle” within the framework of the Llao Llao Forum that takes place in Bariloche, the Governor of Jujuy, Gerardo Morales, spoke with Ambit. He ruled out the possibility of release the stocks on the dollar immediately In case of being elected: “It will take us a year to possibly unify the exchange rate,” he said. He also asked not to replicate what was done between 2015 and 2019, when a series of measures had to be reversed.

Q: Do you see it possible to unify the exchange market immediately as other candidates propose?
GM: We think that it will take us a year to possibly unify the exchange rate. The first three months after the measures that we have to take, that measures must be taken immediately with respect to fiscal order, we can reduce the exchange rate gap quite a bit and get out of the stocks as soon as possible. What we cannot do is replicate what was from 2015 to 2019, we got out of the stocks quickly and we had to put it back, we lowered withholdings and we had to put them back.

Q: Shock or gradualism?
GM: It seems to me that it is neither all shock nor all gradualism. There are measures that have to be done by shock, quickly, and in others work during the first year of government. Next year is going to be a complex year from the side of the measures that must be taken to achieve fiscal order, but on the other hand it is going to be a good year with the harvest. We are going to sell more crude, we are going to sell more gas, we are going to export strong lithium that in 2025 we will be at US$12,000 million, that is what is coming for Argentina
Q: What other measures do you have on the agenda?
GM: In addition to macro measures, we are going to promote a production plan that has not been implemented in recent years. We are going to lower the labor cost and the fiscal pressure to the micro and small companies because from there they will be the anchor to launder the formal economy. Then, another norm for the medium-sized company and for the regional economies.
Q: How did you like Macri’s sayings that speak of “semi-dynamiting” everything?
GM: Those are gimmicky expressions but then there is reality, you have to be reformist. We are going to be transgressors with respect to the productivist program. You have to be a transgressor in the reforms, but not blow everything up. Sounds good but then there is reality. We do not want what happened to us between 2015 and 2019, there is an experience.
Q: Are you worried about the rise of Javier Milei?
GM: Milei is crazy and would do the country a lot of harm. God willing that doesn’t happen, he’s crazy, it reminds me of Milagro Sala, he has the same messianic fundamentalism, that leads societies to chaos. A very complicated character but he is a crazy man on the loose.
