The United States supported the Argentine government and said it wants to help

The Government of the USA expressed his support for President Alberto Fernández and the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massaby ensuring that the Department of the Treasury and the multilateral credit organizations must contribute to the country overcoming the current economic situation.

“I have to give credit to the government of (Alberto) Fernández and Sergio Massa. They are navigating a demanding and very challenging environment, not only political, but also economic in an election year. Sergio, in particular, is advancing with concrete steps, but the challenge is enormous,” said Juan González, one of the main advisers for Latin America to the president of the United States, Joe Biden, during an event carried out by the Spanish news agency EFE.

Gonzalez revealed: “In the conversations that we have had with him (for Massa), the bottom line is that it has to be the Treasury Department, the IMF, the World Bank and the IDB that come up with how to address these challenges. The United States always plays a role constructive in that conversation, including the White House.”.

Massa is facing a renegotiation process of the current agreement with the IMF and the vote of the United States, the organization’s main shareholder, is key.

The economy minister and the US adviser held contacts during the IMF Spring Assembly that took place last week in Washington.

The new president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Ilan Goldfajn, also participated in the event organized by the Spanish agency, who also spoke in support of the Argentine government.

Specifically, he referred to the help that the institution can grant after the severe drought that impacted Argentine production.

“We want to be there for the big natural event that happened and be able to help people”Goldfajn stated.

In this sense, he highlighted the recent approval of a “loan based on health indicators, which is not for a specific government, it is for the people.”

These endorsements to the Argentine Government are known in the midst of an adverse internal climate and surrounded by rumors that in the last few hours have caused a new spike in the exchange rate and the acceleration of the inflationary process.

A good part of these imbalances are produced by the doubts that the country’s financing generates among economic agents in the face of the impact of the drought that will produce a sharp drop in the income of dollars.

In this contextMassa tries to relax the goals for this year included in the agreement with the IMF and, at the same time, fresh funds to compensate for the lack of foreign currency.

The negotiation with the IMF already has its first conversations, after permanent monitoring has already detected that the objectives as of March 31 have not been met.
