Housing: associations are sounding the alarm: new housing construction is on the verge of collapse

The traffic light government has anchored ambitious goals for social housing in its coalition agreement. But without billions in funding, that would be completely illusory, says the housing industry.

The housing industry has warned of a crash in new housing construction and has demanded billions in funding from the federal government. “If nothing happens now, then there will be no downturn in housing construction, then we will experience a real crash in the construction of new apartments,” said Dietmar Walberg from the building research institute ARGE (Kiel) on Thursday at the housing construction day in Berlin.

According to the associations, around 50 billion euros will be needed by 2025 to be able to build 100,000 social housing units per year. In their coalition agreement, the traffic light parties had anchored the construction of 400,000 apartments, 100,000 of which were social housing. Similar to the Bundeswehr, the money should also be made available to the construction industry as a special fund, the associations demanded.

In addition, an increase in existing living space or supermarkets and lower standards in construction must be considered. The industry warned that a “business as usual” policy would lead to a reduction in construction capacity.
