The Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Development meets in Chile

Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero, the UN Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed; the executive secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs; and other authorities will participate from next Tuesday to Friday in the city of Santiago de Chile in the Sixth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development.

With more than 1,000 confirmed representatives of governments, international institutions, the United Nations System, the private sector, academia and civil society, the progress and challenges of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region will be reviewed.

The intergovernmental meeting will be inaugurated next Wednesday by Cafiero, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, the country that exercises the Presidency of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) in the 2022-2024 biennium

Salazar-Xirinachs will present the sixth report on regional progress and challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development entitled Latin America and the Caribbean in the middle of the road to 2030: progress and proposals for acceleration.

The document examines the evolution and current state of progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17, as well as the projection of their fulfillment in 2030.

The regional Forum -which has been held annually since 2017- seeks to provide those responsible for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the countries with a space conducive to learning among peers through a series of interactive sessions.

The sixth meeting contemplates interventions by the representatives of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in two sessions entitled “Accelerating the recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels” ; and “Strategies to advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Caribbean.”

In addition, five dialogue tables have been organized in which the member countries of the Forum and other actors will be able to publicize and share their experiences and challenges in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the following areas: Clean water and sanitation (SDG 6); Affordable and clean energy (SDG 7); Industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9); Sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11); and Partnerships to achieve the Goals (SDG 17).

Finally, there will be a high-level round table entitled “Road to the SDG Summit. Transformative initiatives: creating opportunities to strengthen commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its full implementation at all levels.”
