Supermarket sales posted their biggest annual increase in 15 months in August

Unlike what happened during the most critical months of the Covid-19 pandemic, in the eighth month of the year face-to-face transactions gained ground compared to the previous month, at the rate of the decline in infections, and accounted for 96.3% of total sales.

Regarding the means of payment, the use of the debit card was, as in July, the one that grew the most in annual terms. Even so, it remained behind credit cards and cash, which were the two most widely used media.

The groups of articles with the most significant increases in current prices compared to the same month of the previous year were: “Prepared food and delicatessen” (+ 96.7%); “Clothing, footwear and textiles for the home” (78.3%); “Meat”, (71.1%); and “Drinks” (66.6%).

Meanwhile, the jurisdictions where the most important increases were registered were: La Rioja (83.7%); Jump (83.3%); Tierra del Fuego (80.3%); Jujuy, (78.5%); and Santiago del Estero, (72.5%).

The total employed personnel in supermarkets in August was 92,390 salaried, of which 10,795 have hierarchical positions, which represents 11.7% of the total employed; the remaining 88.3% is made up of tellers, administrative and repositories, which add up to a total of 81,595 employed persons.

Wholesale self-services

Sales surveyed in the Survey of Wholesale Self-Services at constant prices increased 2.4% compared to the same period last year. It was the lowest rise in five months.

In large shopping centers, on the other hand, total sales at constant prices shot up 245.2% compared to August 2020, when shopping malls in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area were closed due to the isolation measures arranged in between of the first wave of coronavirus.
