According to the ministry, the gas storage law has proven to be a “building block for strengthening precautions and ensuring security of supply in the past winter”.
Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck wants to extend a regulation to secure the gas supply introduced during the energy crisis last year. According to the current status, the Gas Storage Act, which sets specifications for storage levels, expires on April 1, 2025. The ministry informed the German Press Agency that it was in favor of a two-year extension.
“The instrument has proven to be a very important building block for strengthening precautions and ensuring security of supply in the past winter,” the statement said. “It should therefore be extended, as it continues to be of great importance for strengthening precautionary measures.” The necessary work on a draft bill for the extension was in progress.
According to the law, German gas storage facilities must be 85 percent full by October 1st, 95 percent by November 1st and 40 percent by February 1st. The storage operators are initially responsible for this. If this does not succeed, a subsidiary of the German gas pipeline operator, Trading Hub Europe, comes into play.
