The first supermarkets are advertising large price reductions and, according to the Federal Statistical Office, average food prices actually fell by 0.8 percent in April 2023 compared to March the previous month. However, this value indicates the average and does not apply to all foods.
Some groceries have become cheaper
For sweets, ready meals and some frozen products, the prices are still rising and are sometimes 40 percent higher than in 2022, when price increases had already started. Food is now even seen as a driver of inflation. In April, the inflation rate was 7.2 percent, but would have been only 5.8 percent without food, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
The consumer center does not expect food prices to fall back to the low level of 2019. Nevertheless, the prices of the first products are now starting to fall again: above all for seasonal products such as vegetables and products that were particularly hard hit by the effects of the Ukraine war at the beginning. This is the result of the consumer price index for food from the Federal Statistical Office.
