Survey: Half of Germans are afraid of poverty in old age

The statutory pension may not be enough – many citizens fear that. Nevertheless, according to a new survey, about one in three does not put aside anything for private old-age provision.

According to a new survey, around half of the people in Germany are afraid of poverty in old age. In the survey by the Yougov survey institute, this was said by 49 percent of men and 56 percent of women.

The client was the financial services group Swiss Life, which published the study. At the same time, 34 percent of women and 30 percent do not put any money aside for private old-age provision. According to Yougov, from April 28 to May 1, 2089 adults over the age of 18 were representative.

women disadvantaged

Apart from the survey, Swiss Life used the evaluation of data from 1.6 million customers for the new edition of its annual “pension report”. These also show that women save less for old age than men, despite their greater worries about the future: 58 percent of the Swiss company’s German customers are male.

Swiss-Life Germany boss Jörg Arnold sees the reason in the fact that men earn more: “The continued existence of income differences between the sexes means that women are doubly disadvantaged, because this is also reflected in the lower average pension entitlements.”

According to Swiss Life, the high inflation has clearly noticeable consequences for private investments. On the one hand, in the Yougov survey, 13 percent said that they had given up on planning to buy an apartment or house because of the rise in interest rates.

At the same time, according to Swiss Life, customer demand for home savings contracts skyrocketed by 212 percent last year, with an average home savings sum of EUR 110,000. According to Arnold, the reason for this is that many people want to secure favorable interest rates for buying their own home in the future.
