The costs for electricity and gas are increasing massively. Around 100 supply companies in Germany have now announced that they will pass the price increase on to customers. Some companies are doubling their prices.
Gas prices in Germany are at a record level. An average household that consumes around 20,000 kWh had to pay 1,532 euros for this in October. A month earlier, the cost was 1423 euros. That corresponds to an increase of eight percent.
The utilities pass the rising prices on to their customers. The comparison portal Check24 reports that 98 utility companies have raised their prices or have announced price increases. Some providers even double their prices. On average, consumers have to accept a price increase of 17.3 percent. Expressed in euros, this means additional costs of 263 euros for the average household. Around 560,000 households in Germany are affected, according to the comparison portal.
The background to the enormous price increases: the wholesale priceforGas is at an all-time high and rose from the previous record in September. In October, 63.26 euros per MWh will be due there. In October 2020, the megawatt hour cost only 11.20 euros. This corresponds to a price increase of an enormous 465 percent. One of the reasons is the currently empty gas storage facilities in the EU, while at the same time the demand for gas is increasing with a view to winter. The increase in the CO2 tax from 25 to 30 euros per ton since January 1, 2021 has also made energy more expensive.

These suppliers raise prices
Especially the suppliers “Erdgasversorgung Schwalmtal GmbH & Co. KG” and “Stadtwerke Barmstedt Xtra GmbH” are increasing their basic and general tariffs enormously. With an increase of more than 128 percent, consumers have to dig deep into their pockets. The “Stadtwerke Löbau GmbH” demands around 113 percent more.
It is not just gas that has become significantly more expensive. There was also a price increase of up to 127 percent for heating oil, according to the comparison portal. Nevertheless, Check24 advises buying heating oil now, the end of the price increase has apparently not yet been reached.
