The announcement was made by the company in the framework of the visit made to the deposit by the Mining Secretary, Fernanda Ávila.
During 2022, the company processed 278,000 ounces of gold, generating exports of more than 500 million dollars and is currently one of the main gold-producing deposits in Argentina and the most important in the province of Santa Cruz.
Cerro Negro employs more than 1,400 workers directly and another 4,800 indirectly, during the past year it generated contracts for 128 million dollars only from Santa Cruz suppliers and from the investment of 540 million dollars announced today it will be able to extend the life useful of the deposit until 2034.
After his visit, the Ávila secretary stressed that the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massais working on “generate the conditions and facilities for this sector to continue growing. These investments demonstrate the commitment of the companies and the potential that the country has to develop this activity in the future.”
Regarding the project in Santa Cruz, the official stressed that “these are state-of-the-art technology facilities: it is the first remotely operated mine in the country. This advance improves the safety and efficiency of the production process.”
Newmont operates the Cerro Negro deposit located in the Deseado Massif in Santa Cruz and since mid-2022 it became the first mine in the country to remotely operate machines from the surface.
In the recent edition of Arminera, María Eugenia Sampalione, manager of External Relations of Newmont Argentina, said that “mining is going towards the technology applied in the production process. Cerro Negro is the first teleoperated mine in Argentina and demanded a huge investment in all what it has to do with the remote control”.
It is that today, in Cerro Negro, the mine is operated from the surface, with a robot and specific software, which represents an advance in the safety of people who, for the most part, went from operating inside the site to working in a command room.
