Can Independent pay the debt with official dollars?

As detailed to Ambit Carlos Maidana, host of the Cinco De Copas podcast and former Independiente supporter journalist, one of the people he knows best the finances of the Avellaneda club“the debt is not US$20 million”, but it is actually around half of that value, but, in addition, he explains that it has an urgent part and another, not so much.

How is the debt of Independiente?

What happens is that Independent You need to resolve that debt to be able to enter the transfer marketwhich opens, now, at the end of May and the beginning of June, and incorporate players, a key element so that “the ball starts rolling” and the Club can begin to generate resources, among other things, to be able to pay its bills earrings.

Now, on the other hand, He has around $4 million in smaller debts with playerss, who are mostly in payment plans, except for a part of that amount of about US$1.2 million with Gastón Silva, who plays for Puebla de México, which is pending, but which, according to the expert in “El Rojo”, “has every will to accept a new payment plan now that the leadership of the club has changed.”

On the other hand, the institution had debts in the local market, that is paying off, but that are not so bulky. Maidana tells, for example, that he paid, a little over a month ago, what he owed to Boca for the pass of the player Pablo Pérez, through an agreed payment plan. And on the other hand, he is the call for creditors to which it was submitted in 2004 and that it never closed, but regarding which the current leadership said that “there remains a creditor to close and clarify a bit of the debt.”

The urgency of the “Devil of Avellaneda”

Thus, roughly, Maidana gives an overview that amounts to around US$10 million, of which US$6 million are urgent to unlock the club’s activity and its chances of participating in championships, which would allow it to generate new resources.

So why is there talk of $20 million? Maidana explains, in this sense, that the issue is that “there is a demand for US$8 million from Gonzalo Verón, a player who was considered fired in a pandemic ”. He sent a document letter, which says that he was rejected, and started a lawsuit, which gave Independiente a payment sentence of $1.2 billion with an adjustment calculation tied to the MEP dollar and an interest rate of 8% to 10% per year. The labor court No. 2 of Avellaneda sent the case to the Supreme Court of the Province of Buenos Aires and, recently, the court validated the arguments presented by Independiente.

“You can validate this debt that, For many, it is a scam.; the value of the dollar can be exchanged for the official one, which would greatly reduce the debt; or the case would go back to zero”, details the partisan journalist among the possible outcomes of the case. But he explains that this cannot enter into those $20 million that Maratea says are necessary for the club because it is not certain or confirmed yet.

But also, some clubs in the United States are indebted to the devil of Avellaneda for passes from some players, which would allow him to save some accounts if the payments are made. Such is the case of Dallas United and Vegas League Soccer and it has two claims before the International Football Federation (FIFA) for debts from Inter Brazil.

Dollars for Maratea: how you can access the official

Thus, Maidana considers that “Independiente’s debt is complex, but it seems more difficult than it is: the urgent thing is US$6 million”. That amount is the one that America owes to Mexico and that it must pay as soon as possible with the money that is coming together, since, as he recalls, the destination of the funds is to pay the debt for the risk of emergencies.

But, How should Maratea do to pay that money to the foreign club in the current context of a shortage of dollars and with a strong exchange rate that regulates the Central Bank (BCRA)?. First of all, a source specialized in the operation of the official exchange market (MULC) explains that “Maratea will never be able to access the MULC.”

It happens that these funds, at some point, must enter the Club accounts and, from there, do the operation. “The debt that is within the regulations that establish the parameters of the payments that the BCRA can approve, can be canceled in the same way that other debts are paid,” the source details. While, of course, the debt that is not documented will not be able to access the MULC.

How the BCRA rates Independiente’s debt

And, on the other hand, the expert in foreign trade and former Secretary of Imports of the Nation, Esteban Mazorati, points out that “Independiente’s debt should be divided into two: on the one hand, the original one and, on the other, the interest generated by late payment”.

In this sense, it is worth mentioning that player transfers abroad are included in the identification of unproduced non-financial goods, a category of capital within the BCRA codes. To do this, there is an obligation to settle the operation in Argentina five days after the payment is made.

But, on the other hand, for what is import, which applies to the case of Independent and is the inverse operation to the pass out, falls into the category of service code. “This type of operation follows a path similar to imports other than those of products and, as happens in almost all cases, these payments require the approval of the BCRA to have the possibility of accessing the MULC, like any other import of this nature. ”, he details. Meanwhile, he clarifies that what has to do with interests has a different treatment.

The big problem noted by a City source specializing in financial legal and regulatory issues is that “if the BCRA approves this payment abroad by Independiente It is very likely that a producer who requires MULC dollars to bring inputs and cannot get them can file a complaint”. Above all, taking into account the level of media exposure that the entire campaign of Maratea and Independiente has.
