In April, Germany’s retailers were able to record a plus. The price increases are also noticeable here and so the joy is probably dampened. The numbers at a glance.
Germany’s retailers posted sales growth in April of the current year. Compared to the previous month, the dealers turned over both real (price-adjusted) and nominal 0.8 percent more, as calculated by the Federal Statistical Office.
Compared to April 2022, however, there was only a nominal increase of 3.9 percent – a result of price increases. Adjusted for price increases, retail sales were 4.3 percent below the same month last year, according to the Wiesbaden authorities.
According to the information, real sales of foodstuffs have been falling for 22 consecutive months compared to the same month last year. “One reason for this decline is likely to be the persistently high food prices,” the statisticians explained. Although food price inflation weakened slightly in April 2023 compared to the same month last year, food prices remained the strongest driver of the overall inflation rate with a plus of 17.2 percent in the month.
