Ukraine: UN: Dam destruction wipes out vital crops

After the destruction of the Kachowka dam, a huge agricultural area is flooded. The grain is thus destroyed – with catastrophic consequences for the poorest in the world.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (WFP) warns of the devastating consequences for starving people worldwide after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine.

“The massive flooding is destroying newly planted grain and with it the hope for 345 million starving people around the world, for whom the grain from Ukraine is a lifesaver,” Martin Frick, head of WFP’s Berlin office, told dpa.

According to initial estimates, after the destruction of the dam in southern Ukraine, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture expects around 10,000 hectares of agricultural land on the northern bank of the Dnipro in the Cherson region to be flooded. On the southern bank, in the Russian-occupied area, a multiple of this area will be flooded, the ministry announced on its website.

Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the destruction of the reservoir, both sides speak of a “terrorist attack” and an unprecedented environmental catastrophe.

Frick emphasized: “The world market prices for food are still at a 10-year high.” The destruction of the dam should not result in any further price explosions. “We can’t afford any more suffering.”
