The bill is controversial. But the Federal Minister of Economics is confident. “I think a lot has changed in the last two weeks,” he says.
Economics Minister Robert Habeck continues to expect a Bundestag decision on the controversial heating law before the summer break. “I think a lot has changed in the last two weeks,” said the Green politician on Thursday, on the sidelines of the commissioning of one of the largest wind-to-heating plants in Wedel, Schleswig-Holstein.
The next step is the first reading of the law in the Bundestag. “From my point of view, there is no reason not to do it, because the corridors for agreements are clearly defined by the many discussions and public announcements.” He would therefore be very surprised “if one were to persevere now not to put it on”.
The law is controversial in the traffic light coalition. Due to fundamental concerns, the FDP has so far prevented the draft law on heating replacement passed by the cabinet from being dealt with in the Bundestag. It stipulates that from 2024 onwards every newly installed heating system will be operated with at least 65 percent green energy. State funding is intended to cushion the switch socially, and there should also be transitional periods and hardship regulations.
