Whatsapp launches with public channels

Messenger service Whatsapp has launched a new function for operating public channels. Channel administrators can use it to send texts, photos, videos or surveys to their followers, as the Meta Group subsidiary explained on Thursday. Initially, the administrator function is therefore available to a select number of organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and FC Barcelona. According to the information, Whatsapp offers a directory of all channels in which they can be searched for by topic. Channels can also be entered via invitation links. Channel content is available for 30 days.

Telephone numbers and profile photos of both channel operators and followers are not visible to other users. However, admins can control who can follow their channel and whether or not their channel should be discoverable in the directory. You can also prevent the creation of screenshots and forwarding of content.

Whatsapp stated that private messaging will remain the main function of the app. But users have long been asking for a public channel feature.
