The new Josef Ressel Center for data-driven business model innovation at the University of Applied Sciences Campus Steyr, which has now been officially opened, is dealing with this question.
Under the leadership of the FH professor for production management, Herbert Jodlbauer, a team of top international researchers is working together with company representatives to transform established and successful beacons of the analogue world into those of the digital world.
Jodlbauer, who designed the Ressel Center and put together the team, indicates where the journey could lead: “The physical product will not bring the main sales, but intelligent service orientation. The customer wants to know that his task, his needs, have been completed using digitization.” Models are coming in which the customer does not buy a machine, but a result, such as a number of items. Car manufacturers have to prepare for the fact that young people don’t want to buy cars but want to share them, says Jodlbauer, who also runs a course in smart production.
The work of the Ressel Center is planned for five years. The costs of two million euros are shared by the Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs on the one hand and the three companies on the other. Ultimately, the research results should be freely accessible.
