For the time being, no decision on the nature conservation law will be made in the European Parliament. There are now 2500 amendments. Not only Federal Environment Minister Lemke is concerned.
Due to time constraints, members of the European Parliament did not manage to reach a final decision on an important law on environmental protection in the environment committee. After more than three hours of tight voting, it was decided to continue the meeting on June 27, wrote the chairman of the environment committee, Pascal Canfin, on Twitter on Thursday. He is pleased that an amendment by the right and extreme right against the law did not find a majority, said the Frenchman. The vote is taking longer than initially assumed, according to Canfin there were around 2,500 amendments in total.
The hotly debated project, according to which, among other things, drained moors are to be rewetted, forests are to be reforested and more greenery is to be brought to cities, has been criticized by Christian Democrats, conservatives and the ID parliamentary group, to which the AfD also belongs. According to the CDU/CSU group, for example, the needs of farmers are not addressed enough and their work is restricted too much. They see the reliable supply of affordable food at risk.
Greens, researchers, environmental organizations and large food companies, on the other hand, are promoting the project. It is argued, among other things, that food safety is at risk if the law is not passed on time, as it will help mitigate the negative impacts of climate change on agriculture.
