Lenzing and the Swedish pulp producer Södra cooperate closely in the field of textile recycling. The aim is to process a large number of complex textiles made from different fibers such as cotton, polyester and other components such as elastane. As part of the project, a pulp plant will be built and the recycling process will be jointly developed, the Upper Austrian fiber group announced. The EU is funding this with 10 million euros. In the future, the Swedish plant in Mörrum will produce 60,000 tons of pulp, which will consist of half recycled material and half renewable pulp from forestry.
“Today, only one percent of the world’s textile waste is recycled, putting a huge strain on the environment”said Åsa Degerman, manager at Södra. “Tackling the textile waste problem requires a systematic approach in addition to technological solutions on an industrial scale”added Sonja Zak, Head of Textile Sourcing & Cooperations at Lenzing.
