At the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, the rush of passengers at the beginning of the summer holidays is still pending. Lufthansa sees itself better prepared than in the chaos of the previous year.
According to the company, Lufthansa flight operations this summer are much more stable and punctual than last year.
“We want a summer with much happier guests and more stability than last year,” said airline boss Jens Ritter on Tuesday evening in Frankfurt. The company mastered the last endurance test over Pentecost with adverse weather conditions, a closed runway and more than 390,000 guests at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs.
They are not yet completely satisfied with the punctuality, but they are working on it together with their partners in the air transport system, said Ritter. The minor impact of the NATO maneuver “Air Defender” in June had shown that air traffic works best with close cooperation.
increased staff
The Lufthansa airline hired more than 1,000 new people for its own operations and pushed ahead with automated processes. In Munich, for example, around 90 percent of passengers checked themselves in, freeing up staff to work at the gate. At both hubs, innovative scanners also accelerated passenger and hand luggage checks. Particular attention is also paid to ensuring that the first flight in the morning starts very punctually so that the daily circulation does not start with delays.
Contrary to original plans, Germany’s largest airline had again canceled thousands of flights for this summer in order to enable stable operations together with airports, air traffic control and handlers. More replacement machines and reserve crews are available for this purpose. Only around 80 percent of the pre-crisis capacity is currently being offered, although this figure is expected to rise to 85 percent in the summer.
