This was announced by OMV on Wednesday. The take-over points for the natural gas are the nodes Oberkappel in Upper Austria (pipeline from Germany) and Arnoldstein in Carinthia (pipeline from Italy).
40 TWh corresponds to almost half of Austria’s annual gas requirements.
“OMV is actively promoting the diversification of its gas supply sources, which includes gas from its own production and purchases from Norway as well as other LNG volumes,” said CEO Alfred Stern, according to a broadcast on Wednesday. With the additional transport capacities, the company secures its delivery obligations towards its contract customers in the medium term.
OMV also stores gas on an ongoing basis. The company’s storage facilities are currently around 85 percent full.
The Ministry of Finance welcomed the additional capacities. They are “an important step for security of supply. Because Austria will still need gas in the medium term. This award to OMV gives security for several years,” said Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP), according to a broadcast. This means that OMV is well prepared in the event that Russian gas supplies are interrupted.
