Globally, demand, measured in cargo ton-kilometres (CTK), fell 5.2% compared to May 2022 (-6% for international operations).
The warehouse capacitymeasured by available freight ton-kilometres (ACTK), increased 14.5% year-on-yearmainly driven by cargo capacity on passenger flights, which increases as demand in that sector recovers.
Warehouse capacity is now 5.9% above May 2019 levels, pre-pandemic.

“The commercial terms for air cargo remain challenging with a 5.2% drop in demand and various economic indicators pointing to weakness,” said Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.

He added that “the second half of the year, however, should bring some improvements,” because he stressed that “as inflation moderates in many markets, central bank rate hikes are expected to ease.”
He also considered that “this should help stimulate the economic activity with a positive impact on the demand for air cargo”.
