the use of installed capacity fell in May for the first time in the year

The block with the highest installed capacity was petroleum refining (83.1%), while the one with the least was rubber and plastic products (55.9%).

The utilization of the installed capacity of the industry fell in May for the first time in the year, registering 67.8%, two tenths below the 68% for the same month in 2022, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) reported this Wednesday.

The blocks that have levels higher than the general level are oil refining (83.1%)basic metal industries (81.7%), paper and cardboard (78.7%), chemical substances and products (74.5%) and non-metallic mineral products (72.7%).

While the sectors that were below the general level are tobacco products (65.5%), food and beverages (64.6%), the automotive industry (62.4%), publishing and printing (58.1%), %), textile products (58.0%), metal mechanics except automotive (56.3%) and rubber and plastic products (55.9%).

In May, compared to the same month of the previous year, the main negative impact is observed in non-metallic mineral products with a level of utilization of the installed capacity of 72.7%, lower than that of the same month of 2022 (81.4%), mainly as a consequence of the lower production of hollow bricks and cement.

The metal-mechanic industry, except automotive, presents a level of utilization of installed capacity of 56.3%lower than the one registered in the same month of the previous year (57.1%), mainly as a consequence of the lower manufacturing of appliances for domestic use and agricultural machinery.

Food and beverage products register a level of utilization of installed capacity of 64.6%, lower than that of May of the previous year (64.8%)essentially related to the lower milling of oilseeds and the drop in the activity of the plants that produce soft drinks and beers.

In May, the automotive industry exhibits the main positive incidence, with a level of utilization of installed capacity of 62.4%higher than that of May of the previous year (57.1%), related to the greater number of units manufactured by automotive terminals.

Oil refining shows a level of utilization of installed capacity of 83.1% in May, higher than that registered in the same month of the previous year (81.3%), from the highest level of crude oil processing. Indeed, according to data from the industrial manufacturing production index (IPI manufacturing), the production of gasoline and diesel present, in May, interannual increases of 9.0% and 2.8%, respectively.
