The General Directorate of Customs prevented the import of 1,630 trampolines of Asian origin in Port of Buenos Aires that did not comply with customs regulations and security, which could result in a fine greater than $130 millionThe agency reported this Saturday in a statement.
Customs calculated that the elastic beds were valued at US$97,497.13 and therefore the penalty fee could be up to $134,545,860.
“We work to avoid this type of maneuver that put children’s health at risk and merchandise that does not meet safety standards cannot enter,” said the general director of Customs, William Michel.
Michael pointed out that this kind of actions on the part of the organism seek, in addition, “put companies that work properly and generate employment in the country on an equal footing”.
“These operations carried out by Customs are very important for small and medium-sized companies by helping protect national industry and Argentine labor“He stated, along the same lines, Marcelo Fernandezpresident of the General Business Confederation of the Argentine Republic (Cgera).
How were trampolines discovered?
A group of specialized Customs agents detected the irregularity when carrying out a series of routine checks in the Terminal 4 of the Port of Buenos Aires.
There, as indicated by Customs, the inspectors identified four containers with a load of elastic beds which had been declared in a tariff position different from the one that corresponded.
This maneuver tried to place the beds in a category with different requirementswhich is presumed to have intention of trying to bring them into the country “without processing toy safety certificates” which establishes the Mercosur technical regulation on said products, formalized in the resolution 163/2005.
Once verified the lack of certificationthe agents ordered the seizure of merchandisefor having transgressed the Customs Code in its article 954.
