The world market for computers, which includes desktop computers, laptops and workstations, fell for the sixth consecutive semester, in this case by 13.4% in the second quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year, to 61.6 million of shipments.
According to data published by the technology consultancy IDC, the macroeconomic trends have caused a decrease in demand from consumers and commercial sectors, although they point out that the market performed better than forecast.
In addition, they point to a change in the consumption and savings habits of buyers, which have caused a reduction in the budgets allocated to the purchase of technological devices.
Sixth consecutive quarter of losses
With the exception of Apple and HP, the major companies posted year-over-year losses of between 16.5% and 22% through June, in what would be the sixth consecutive quarter of market contraction, IDC notes.

A post-pandemic sector
The consultancy has indicated that the reduction of the market has generated a saturation in the inventories of the companies, which fear seeing their component reservations after the difficulties experienced last year with supply chains.
“The roller coaster of supply and demand that the computing industry has experienced over the last five years has been extremely challenging,” Ryan Reith, vice president of the Client Device Monitoring group, said in a statement.
According to data published by the IDC, the peak of the ddemand for devices It happened in the first quarter of 2021, a period in which computer sales grew 55.9% year-on-year worldwide, after growing 25.8% in the last quarter of 2020.
Two years ago, in the second quarter of 2021, the shipment of computers reached 83.6 million units, 13.2% more than the same period in 2020, which indicated a cooling compared to the growth experienced in previous cycles.
With respect to second quarter of 2021, Lenovo has reduced its shipments in 2023 by 5.8 million, 29% less; HP 5.1 million, 28.6% less; Dell Technologies 3.6 million, 26.9% less; Apple 800,000, 14.2% less; and Acer Group 2 million, 34.4% less.
Already in 2021, the consultancy warned that throughout the year the demand for computers would decrease, after a year of “aggressive” acquisition of equipment, as consumer spending habits turned to other priorities.
The consultancy expects computer shipments to continue to decline until they reach levels similar to those that existed before the pandemic. In addition, it highlights the uncertainty generated in the market by the irruption of the artificial intelligence (AI).
