The reason for the investment is the growth of the plant in Kirchbach-Zerlach in south-east Styria, where power and high-voltage resistors are produced under the “EBG Resistors” brand. Sales have doubled in recent years from 18 to almost 37 million euros – now the production area is to be doubled to 6,300 square meters.
The location, which has existed since 1977, is expanded by a two-storey building. The previous external production in St. Stefan im Rosental will then be integrated into the factory location. According to the technology group, the investment will create 40 new jobs. Miba (based in Laakirchen) bought the power electronics specialist EBG and its plant in Kirchbach in 2010. The Upper Austrian family business currently employs 300 people in Styria.
The EGB power electronics produced are used in buses, trains and medical devices, among other things. The growth in this sector was fueled by the energy transition: According to Miba, around 90 percent of all manufacturers of wind turbines use power resistors from EGB.
They are also used in the automotive industry: the discharge resistors installed in electric vehicles safely reduce the existing voltage when they are switched off. In addition, the technology makes an important contribution to the lowest possible loss of energy transmission in power grids.
