Labor market: Many academic specialists with a Blue Card have stayed

Majority stays in Germany: 83 percent of Blue Card specialists from non-EU countries stayed in the country after entering the country. The rate is lower for students.

They have been brought to Germany from non-EU countries to work with the so-called Blue Card since 2012: five years after entering the country, 83 percent of academic specialists have stayed in the country, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

In contrast, only 55 percent of the students who also came with the Blue Card. By 2022, almost 200,000 people in Germany will have received a Blue Card.

According to figures from the Central Register of Foreigners, almost 69,000 people received a Blue Card for the first time between 2012 and 2017. In this group, Indians made up the largest group at 22.4 percent, ahead of people from China (8.7 percent) and Russia (7.5 percent). Most (59.9 percent) from this group lived in Germany five years after entering Germany on the basis of an unlimited settlement permit, 11.3 percent became German citizens. 16.7 percent left the country.
