Electricity: Energy transition: Eon boss Birnbaum calls for a reduction in bureaucracy

Eon boss Leonhard Birnbaum is concerned about the success of the energy transition. He also gives the reasons why he doesn’t think it can be done any faster.

In the opinion of Eon boss Leonhard Birnbaum, a reduction in bureaucracy is required in addition to capital for the energy transition to be successful. “We need a significant acceleration and streamlining of the planning and approval procedures,” said Birnbaum on Wednesday in Essen with a view to planned investments in the electricity distribution grid. The focus of political decision-makers should now be on achieving the goals that have been set. To do this, the obstacles would have to be consistently removed.

“The chancellor is talking about speed in Germany. Now he just has to make sure that the authorities understand what he means,” said Birnbaum. “I would now say very carefully: They have only understood this to a limited extent or have only been involved in their actions to a limited extent. That has to change now.”
