If the price of CO2 rises, so do heating costs. The comparison portal Check24 calculates which additional costs could be incurred by the individual.
According to media reports, the federal government intends to increase the CO2 tax next year to EUR 40 per ton instead of EUR 35. This increases the heating costs for gas and heating oil customers. The comparison portal Check24 has calculated this in percent and euros for model households.
A model household that heats with gas and consumes 20,000 kilowatt hours a year will have to pay a CO2 tax of around 190 euros in 2024. At a charge of 35 euros, it would have been almost 167 euros.
If the price of CO2 rises, so do heating costs
If a household heats with heating oil and consumes 2000 liters a year, then according to Check24 it has to expect a CO2 tax of around 252 euros. That is almost 32 euros more than a fee of 35 euros.
“In the coming years, heating with gas and oil will become more and more expensive, not only because of the CO2 tax,” explained Steffen Suttner, Managing Director Energy at Check24. “We expect fossil fuels to become more expensive overall in the future.” The comparison portal recommends a provider comparison. By switching from the expensive basic gas supply, consumers could save a lot of money.
The federal government approved the draft of the economic plan of the climate and transformation fund (KTF) on Wednesday – one source of income is the CO2 tax on heating oil, natural gas, petrol or diesel that has been levied since 2021. It is currently around 30 euros per tonne. In 2025 it should reach 45 euros per tonne.
