Labor market: The number of people in work is hardly increasing

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the pace of growth in the labor market has slowed. The number of self-employed and employees in agriculture and forestry fell again.

The number of people in employment in Germany rose only slowly in the second quarter of this year. According to figures from the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday, 45.9 million people were employed. That was 240,000 more than in the previous quarter, an increase of 0.5 percent. However, the seasonal increase in spring is normal and was weaker this year than before. Adjusted for the seasonal effects, the increase was only 67,000 men and women or 0.1 percent. The office concluded that the pace of growth was slowing down.

Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, growth was 0.7 percent, which was well below the EU average (+1.3 percent) and below that of the euro area (+1.5 percent). The service sectors in particular contributed to the increase in this country. But more people were also employed in industry than a year earlier. The number of self-employed and employees in agriculture and forestry fell again. The overall economic volume of work increased by 0.8 percent to 14.6 billion hours over the year. On average, each employed person worked 319.1 hours in the quarter.
