According to a survey, the shortage of trainees is getting worse. The areas of gastronomy, industry and trade are particularly affected.

According to a survey, more and more companies in Germany are not finding enough trainees. This affects 47 percent of the training companies, as the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) announced on Wednesday in Berlin with reference to a survey of companies. The DIHK spoke of a new all-time high. Gastronomy, industry and trade have been looking for trainees in vain. The lack of trainees is becoming a shortage of skilled workers, said the deputy DIHK general manager Achim Dercks.

Overall, however, the figures for training contracts concluded at the end of July are slightly positive, said Dercks. After the corona-related slumps, there are good prospects that in 2023 more companies and trainees will find each other through a training contract than in the previous year. By the end of July, almost 207,000 new training contracts had been signed by the chambers of industry and commerce – 3.7 percent more than in the same month last year.

However, many tens of thousands of training places are likely to remain unfilled. The core problem is demographic change. According to the DIHK, there are around 100,000 fewer school leavers today than there were ten years ago. Among other things, this means that soon up to 400,000 more employees will leave the labor market than new ones will join.
