In this sense, Marcó Del Pont highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the use of the information exchanged through the different mechanisms to improve collection. “The exploitation of the exchange of information allowed us to improve our collection capacity,” said the economist, stating that “in particular the focus was placed on the sectors with the highest taxable capacity, which are those that have the most sophisticated advice to evade and evade as taxpayers ”.
During her speech, the AFIP head stressed that “The international exchange of information is an invaluable tool to increase equity in our region, since those who can arbitrate between jurisdictions to evade taxes, or hide their financial crimes, tend to be those who have the greatest tax capacity.”
The exploitation of information on financial accounts of Argentines abroad allowed the agency to collect more than 600 million pesos. The data used by the agency to collect evaded taxes from companies and individuals comes from more than 90 countries that share their records automatically as part of a global mechanism for the exchange of information on bank placements.
The Punta del Este Declaration is an initiative promoted by Latin American countries within the framework of the OECD Global Forum that addresses the problems of illicit financial flows from a regional perspective and promotes international tax cooperation. Argentina, through AFIP, was in charge of the presidency of space during 2021. Throughout this year two new countries joined the Declaration of Punta del Este: Mexico and El Salvador. Thus, there are already 16 countries in the region that are members.
“Without a doubt, it is a clear example of the political commitment at the regional level to combat tax evasion and contribute to reinforcing public financing that allows us to implement the public policies that our countries need to carry out in order to achieve development with equity”, said Marcó del Pont when referring to the expansion of the members to the Declaration.
