Labor market: Bosch boss calls for modernization of the education system

Are well-qualified developers becoming a scarce commodity in Germany? Due to the shortage of skilled workers, Stefan Hartung calls for a more modern education system. Otherwise, in the future, it would be more likely to be developed elsewhere.

The boss of the technology group Bosch, Stefan Hartung, has called for a better education system in Germany. “The demographic development will exacerbate the shortage of skilled workers in Germany without there being any easy resistance – in the future, only qualified immigration and a good education system will help us,” said Hartung of the German Press Agency at the IAA motor show in Munich.

It is tragic to see how many young university dropouts and untrained people there are in this country. “That shouldn’t really happen,” said Hartung. For Bosch, one of the most important competitive factors is that the education system is modernized as quickly as possible so that companies can get the talent they need.

Software is becoming increasingly important for the automotive supplier. So far, Bosch has done very well in Germany when looking for developers, said Hartung. “Will that also be the case for the next 30 years? I dare not predict that.” In the so-called MINT professions, he doesn’t exactly see any increasing potential for talent. “Just because of the small number of people currently studying in this field.” The abbreviation MINT includes professions and subjects in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

More important than the sheer number of developers, however, is their qualification. It’s about having the best possible developers. “With the use of artificial intelligence, a productivity boost will also be possible here,” said Hartung. But: “If productivity doesn’t increase, it means that we will lose added value to other regions.”
